ACCLAIMED SINGER-SONGWRITER DAR WILLIAMS PERFORMS AS PART OF CITY FOLK® LIVE AT ZANKEL
ON SATURDAY, DECEMBER 1 AT 8:30 P.M.
On Saturday, December 1 at 8:30 p.m., acclaimed singer-songwriter Dar Williams performs in Zankel Hall as a part of Carnegie Hall’s City Folk® Live at Zankel series. A mainstay on the American folk scene, Ms. Williams is known for a songwriting and performing style that has drawn comparisons to Joni Mitchell and Joan Baez. The concert series, which is presented in partnership with WFUV, 90.7 FM, celebrates the art of singer-songwriters and highlights the eclectic nature of modern folk music. WFUV’s Music Director, Rita Houston, curates the series with Carnegie Hall and serves as host for the concerts.
Dar Williams first established herself as a star of New England’s folk scene in the early 1990s, and over the course of seven albums has developed her own lush pop-folk sound to back her witty and often personal lyrics. Starting her career performing in coffee houses in New England, Ms. Williams gained widespread acclaim after the release of her second album, Mortal City, and a subsequent tour opening for Joan Baez. Since then, she has expanded her musical repertoire well beyond traditional folk music, and has teamed up with a wide range of artists including John Medeski, Alison Krauss, and Chris Botti. In October 2007, Ms. Williams released her first DVD, Live at Bearsville Theater, featuring some of her most well-known hits, including “As Cool As I Am,” ‘When I was a Boy,’ and “Iowa (Traveling III).”
Throughout her career, Ms. Williams has maintained a commitment to social activism, supporting causes such as environmental protection, and helping spearhead grassroots organizations around the country alongside her fans. In 2005, she inaugurated a program, entitled the Echoes Initiative, that allows her to formally partner with various local organizations to help raise funds and awareness for their missions. Ms. Williams has also branched off into the publishing realm as an author of two novels for young readers, Amalee and Lights, Camera, Amalee, both published by Scholastic Press.
Carnegie Hall’s City Folk® Live at Zankel, which began in October 2005, is based on WFUV’s pioneering City Folk® format that blends adult rock, singer-songwriters, and roots music. In addition to Dar Williams, this season included a performance by the Cowboy Junkies (October 20), and will feature Joan Osborne (March 7), and Josh Rouse (April 18).
WFUV (90.7 FM, wfuv.org) is a non-commercial, listener-supported public radio station, licensed to Fordham University for more than 50 years.
