THE NEW YORK POPS KICKS OFF ITS CARNEGIE HALL SERIES
WITH CONDUCTOR STUART MALINA IN A PROGRAM ENTITLED
THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT: HOLLYWOOD’S GOLDEN ERA ON FRIDAY, OCTOBER 26

Special Guest Artist Michael Feinstein and Violinist Pip Clarke Join the Orchestra

On Friday, October 26 at 8:00 p.m. in Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage, Stuart Malina leads The New York Pops in a program of unforgettable Hollywood classics with special guest artist Michael Feinstein. Together, Mr. Feinstein and the orchestra will celebrate the great songs of Hollywood and the great Tin Pan Alley writers with songs from The Band Wagon, Babes on Broadway, A Damsel in Distress, and Shall We Dance. Entitled That’s Entertainment: Hollywood’s Golden Era, the program also features Academy Award-winning composer Erich Korngold’s romantic Violin Concerto in D Major, with soloist Pip Clarke. Mr. Korngold pioneered the symphonic film score in pre-war Hollywood in such classics as Captain Blood, The Prince and the Pauper, and The Adventures of Robin Hood, for which he won an Academy Award.

The New York Pops returns to Carnegie Hall for five additional performances this season. On December 14 and 15, legendary Tonight Show bandleader Doc Severinsen conducts the orchestra and soprano Nicole Cabell in a festive program of holiday favorites. The 150-voice Fort Worth-TCU Symphonic Choir, under the direction of Ronald Shirey, also appears on the program. On January 25, Andrew Litton makes his debut with The New York Pops as conductor and pianist in an all-Gershwin program, entitled Gershwin: Great Moments from Porgy and Bess and Dayful of Song. Marvin Hamlisch returns to lead the orchestra on February 8 in a concert of swing-era favorites from the big bands of Miller, Dorsey, Goodman, and more. Music from Carmen Jones and Show Boat form the centerpiece of the performance on April 4, a tribute to theater legend Oscar Hammerstein II. David Charles Abell conducts the evening’s program, which will star Broadway’s Sutton Foster with special guests Rosena Hill and Aaron Lazar.

The New York Pops was founded by Skitch Henderson in 1983 to give New York a permanent professional symphonic pops orchestra that would create greater public awareness and appreciation of America’s rich musical heritage. The orchestra is now the largest independent symphonic pops orchestra in the United States—performing free concerts in New York City, and, through its extensive education program, allowing public schoolchildren the opportunity to participate in numerous concert and music-making experiences. The New York Pops’ recordings include a recently reissued CD of the orchestra’s 1983 debut performance as well as From Berlin to Bernstein, The New York Pops Goes to the Movies, Christmas in the Country, Magical Moments from Great Musicals, and With A Song in My Heart—the Music of Richard Rodgers with Maureen McGovern. For the third year in a row in the summer of 2007, the orchestra performed the musical accompaniment to the Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular, seen by more than 10 million television viewers nationwide on NBC. The New York Pops has received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York State Council on the Arts, and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.
