PERELMAN AMERICAN ROOTS (GRADES 6–8)
African American Song

The Perelman American Roots program explores American musical history in middle school social studies and choral classrooms. Through sequential lessons, Teaching Artist visits, and program concerts, students delve into the historical and cultural context of the chosen area of study.

The 2008–09 program will focus on African American Song. The final concert artists will be the storied Fisk Jubilee Singers from Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee.

Perelman American Roots: African American Song

The 2008–09 Perelman American Roots program, which includes all of the features described here, will focus on the history of African American Song. The curriculum will contain 15 lessons, including five Teaching Artist lessons and three lessons supporting the creation of a final project. The program includes a concert at the Apollo Theater in Harlem and a culminating performance at Carnegie Hall.
