In a Holiday Tradition, the New York String Orchestra Returns for
Annual Concerts with Conductor Jaime Laredo on December 24 & 28

This December, celebrate the holidays at Carnegie Hall! For over a century, Carnegie Hall has been a place for audiences to gather and experience the transforming power of music. This year, the tradition continues with five special holiday-themed concerts in Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage, enhanced by the joyful ambience of the historic building.

•    Kick-off the holiday season with soprano and opera sensation Deborah Voigt and the Orchestra of St. Luke’s on Tuesday, December 16. Ms. Voigt performs a special program entitled Deborah Voigt: Let it Show!, which includes holiday classics such as “I Wonder as I Wander,” Leroy Anderson’s “Sleigh Ride,” “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” and the traditional Victorian carols (“Lo, How a Rose E’re Blooming” and “O Holy Night”). Rounding out the program are memorable holiday arias by Handel, "I Know That My Redeemer Liveth" from The Messiah, and Schubert’s "Ave Maria," among others.

•    The New York Pops join in the holiday spirit with Musical Director Rob Fisher and the King’s Singers on Friday, December 19 and Saturday, December 20 performing festive holiday favorites. The King’s Singers’ repertoire encompasses many genres including medieval music to masterpieces of the Renaissance as well as lieder, folk, pop, jazz, and contemporary works. During 2008, they celebrate 40 years of music making and over the course of their career they have delighted audiences around the world with incomparable musicianship, charm, and wit.

•    And, now an annual holiday tradition, conductor Jaime Laredo leads the New York String Orchestra, an ensemble composed of 62 young musicians between the ages of 15 and 22 from across the US in two concerts during the last week of December. The New York String Orchestra seminar is now celebrating its 40th Anniversary Season. Founded in 1969, notable alumni of the orchestra’s seminar include cellist Yo-Yo Ma and violinist Cho-Liang Lin and Gil Shaham, among others. On December 24, the orchestra performs an all-Mozart program with violinist Augustin Hadelich. Works include the overture to The Marriage of Figaro; Violin Concerto No. 5 in A Major, "Turkish"; and Symphony No. 40 in G Minor. The orchestra returns on December 28 with pianists Joseph Kalichstein, Shai Wosner, and Alon Goldstein performing Mozart’s Concerto for Three Pianos in F Major; Harbison’s The Most Often Used Chords; and Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 3 in A Minor, "Scottish".
