CARNEGIE HALL PROGRAM UPDATES FOR 2008–2009 SEASON

Please note the following artist and program updates to the 2008–2009 season. For complete details, please see the attached season chronological listing.

October 7, 2008: Ensemble ACJW—Elliott Carter’s Esprit Rude/Esprit Doux has been added to this program. Also on this program are works by George Crumb, Kayhan Kalhor, and Franz Schubert.

October 11, 2008: Yundi Li—A complete program has been announced. Mr. Li will perform works by Mozart, Liszt, Chopin, and Mussorgsky.

October 17, 2008: The New York Pops—A complete all-Bernstein program has been added, and vocalist Lillias White has been added to the roster of performers.

October 20, 2008: Isabel Bayrakdarian—The Manitoba Chamber Orchestra and conductor Anne Manson will join soprano Isabel Bayrakdarian for her concert in tribute to Armenian composer Gomidas. Featured soloists on this program include pianist Serouj Kradjian and duduk player Hampic Djabourian.

October 26, 2008: Maurizio Pollini—This complete program features two Beethoven sonatas, and works by Schumann and Chopin.

November 4, 2008: Bernstein’s Interpretive Logic—A new lecture presented by the New York Philharmonic in the Walter Reade Theater at Lincoln Center has been added to the schedule for this fall’s Bernstein: The Best of All Possible Worlds festival. Charles Zachary Bornstein, Leonard Bernstein Scholar-in-Residence at the New York Philharmonic from 2005 to 2008, will interpret Bernstein’s score markings in works by Sibelius, Mahler, Beethoven, and others.

November 7, 2008: The New York Pops—Vocalist Jack Jones will no longer be performing on this program; vocalist Ashley Brown has been added to the roster of artists on this concert.

November 14, 2008; February 20 and May 1, 2009: American Composers Orchestra—Programs for this 2008–09 series of concerts in Zankel Hall have been updated. On November 14, Fred Ho will perform baritone saxophone on his world premiere, When the Real Dragons Fly! On February 20, electronics performers Miller Puckette and Rand Steiger have been added to the artist lineup performing on Steiger’s composition Cryosphere. Also on this program video artist Kasumi will collaborate with composer Margaret Brouwer on the world premiere of their composition, The Earth Breathing. On May 1, a new work by Lukas Ligeti for electronic mallet and orchestra has been added; Ligeti will play the marimba lumina.

December 12, 2008: Making Music: Elliott Carter— Violinist Rolf Schulte and cellist Fred Sherry will perform the world premiere of Elliott Carter’s Duettino for Violin and Cello as part of this all-Carter program celebrating the composer’s 100th birthday.

December 24 and 28, 2008: New York String Orchestra—On December 24 violinist Augustin Hadelich will perform Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 5 in A Major, K. 219, "Turkish". On December 28, pianists Joseph Kalichstein, Shai Wosner, and Alon Goldstein join the orchestra for Mozart’s Concerto for Three Pianos in F Major, K. 242. Works by Harbison and Mendelssohn are also on the program.

February 10, 2009: Jon Hassell—This program, entitled Maarifa Street, by electro-acoustic jazz pianist and trumpet player Jon Hassell also features Peter Freeman (bass and laptop), Jan Bang (live sampling and electronics), Helge Norbakken (drums), and Kheir-Eddine M'Kachiche (violin).

March 28, 2009: Ian Bostridge/Julius Drake—A complete, all-Schubert program has been announced.

April 2, 2009: Klezmer All-Star Bash—This concert featuring clarinetist David Krakauer as Artistic Director, has a complete line-up of artists including David Krakauer's Klezmer Madness!, The Klezmatics, Brave Old World, Mikveh, the Frank London & Lorin Sklamberg Nigunim Trio with Rob Schwimmer, vocalist Katie Moore, sampler/pianist/vocalist SoCalled, and emcee Michael Wex.

April 2, 2009: George Wein and Friends—Violinist Regina Carter and trumpet player Randy Sandke have been added to the roster of artists performing on this program.

April 24, 2009: Eric Owens/Bradley Moore—Pianist Bradley Moore will join bass-baritone Eric Owens in this recital.

April 24, 2009: Terry Riley's In C
Artists have been added to the 45th anniversary celebration of the premiere of Terry Riley’s seminal work In C. The performance will be curated by the Kronos Quartet and promises to be a one-of-a-kind gathering of stellar musicians. David Harrington serves as Artistic Director for this monumental evening featuring the Kronos Quartet, Terry Riley; original In C performers Stuart Dempster, Jon Gibson, and Pauline Oliveros; as well as Dennis Russell Davies, Dave Douglas, Jacob Garchik, Michael Hearst, Samuli Kosminen, Margaret Leng Tan, Aaron Shaw, Kathleen Supové, Wu Man, Yi Yang, Evan Ziporyn, Quartet New Generation, So Percussion, and members of the Grand Valley State University New Music Ensemble, among others. 

April 25, 2009: Ensemble ACJW—Conductor Oliver Knussen has had to withdraw from this concert in order to devote time to compositional work. A replacement conductor and program will be announced at a future date.


Also please note these additional updates to the season, which were previously announced in June:

January 13, 2009: Gil Shaham and Friends—A third concert by Gil Shaham and Friends will replace the previously announced duo recital by violinists Viktoria Mullova and Giuliano Carmignola. Mullova and Carmignola canceled their US concert tour. (Two other concerts by Shaham and Friends take place on February 6 and February 9.)

February 8, 2009: Emerson String Quartet—Prokofiev’s String Quartet No. 1 replaces the previously announced Thomas Adès String Quartet, commissioned by Carnegie Hall, on this program. The Adès commission will be performed in a future season.

March 17, 2009: The Philadelphia Orchestra—Bass-baritone Eric Owens will perform Mahler’s Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen with The Philadelphia Orchestra under the direction of Chief Conductor and Artistic Adviser Charles Dutoit, replacing the previously announced Violin Concerto by George Walker. Part of the Carnegie Hall festival Honor! A Celebration of the African American Cultural Legacy curated by Jessye Norman, this concert will be dedicated to the memory of legendary African-American singer Marian Anderson. A Philadelphia native known for her performances of this Mahler work, Ms. Anderson performed at Carnegie Hall 57 times during her lifetime.

Ticket Information
Beginning on September 2, single tickets will be available. Subscriptions are currently available at the Carnegie Hall Box Office, 154 West 57th Street, or can be charged to major credit cards by calling CarnegieCharge at 212-247-7800 or by visiting the Carnegie Hall website, www.carnegiehall.org.

In addition, for all Carnegie Hall Corporation presentations taking place in Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage, a limited number of partial-view seats, priced at $10, will be available day-of-concert beginning at 11:00 a.m. Monday through Saturday and 12:00 noon on Sunday until one hour before the performance. The exceptions are Carnegie Hall Family Concerts and gala events. These $10 tickets are available to the general public on a first-come, first-served basis at the Carnegie Hall Box Office only. There is a two-ticket limit per customer.

A limited number of student/senior citizen discount tickets, priced at $10, may also be available for some Carnegie Hall events. They are on sale at the Box Office day-of-concert beginning at 11:00 a.m. Monday through Saturday and 12:00 noon on Sunday until one hour before the performance. Student/senior discount tickets for some Weill Recital Hall events are available at the Box Office one hour before the performance. Please call CarnegieCharge for ticket availability.
