GARY LOURIS & MARK OLSON OF THE JAYHAWKS, AND the bird and the bee
PERFORM IN ANNUAL SERIES PRESENTED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH WFUV, 90.7 FM

Carnegie Hall today announced the lineup for the fourth season of its popular WFUV Live at Zankel series. This season includes performances by Nick Lowe (October 17), Kathleen Edwards and John Doe (November 7), Gary Louris and Mark Olson (February 7), and the bird and the bee (March 7). The series, which is presented in partnership with WFUV, 90.7 FM, celebrates the art of singer-songwriters and highlights the eclectic nature of modern folk music. WFUV’s Music Director, Rita Houston, curates the series with Carnegie Hall and serves as host for the concerts.

•   Nick Lowe, Friday, October 17 at 8:30 p.m.—With a career spanning over 40 years, Nick Lowe has long been a part of the music industry as songwriter, performer, and producer. Lowe is known as the leader of 1970s seminal pub rock group Brinsley Schwarz—whose best known song “(What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding” was a major hit for Elvis Costello—and a pioneer of the D.I.Y. punk aesthetic, having produced early albums by Costello and The Damned. He scored his own early hit with the pure pop of “Cruel To Be Kind” and has since concentrated on drawing from American roots music, pop, country, soul, and R&B to forge a unique sound. His most recent album, At My Age, was released in 2007 and included Chrissie Hynde lending her vocals to the track, “People Change.”

•   Kathleen Edwards and John Doe, Friday, November 7 at 8:30 p.m.—Drawing comparisons to Lucinda Williams and Gillian Welch, Canadian singer-songwriter, Kathleen Edwards has earned accolades for her blend of country, folk, and pop music. Since embarking on her musical career, Edwards has opened for Willie Nelson, John Prine, Aimee Mann, My Morning Jacket, and John Mayer. Releases include Juno Award-nominated album Back to Me as well as the more recent Asking for Flowers. An influential figure in American punk and alternative rock scene of the 1980s with his band X, John Doe’s solo career has followed a country rock direction with albums such as Meet John Doe, Freedom Is …, Forever Hasn’t Happened Yet, and A Year in the Wilderness, which features “Golden State,” a duet with Kathleen Edwards.

•   Gary Louris and Mark Olson, Saturday, February 7 at 8:30 p.m.—Founding members of the acclaimed alt-country band, The Jayhawks, singer-songwriters Gary Louris and Mark Olson have continued to tour and record together as well as concentrate on their own solo albums. Since the disbanding of The Jayhawks, Louris has worked with Nickel Creek, Chris Thile, and the Dixie Chicks, among others. He is also a member of the musical collective, Golden Smog, which has also featured Jeff Tweedy of Wilco, Dave Pirner of Soul Asylum, and Chris Mars of The Replacements. Olsen embarked on his post-Jayhawks career with the well-received album The Original Harmony Ridge Creek Dippers; later followed by December’s Child, which reunited him with Olsen on the track “Say You’ll Be Mine.” The album, Ready for the Flood, featuring Louris and Olsen, and produced by Chris Robinson of The Black Crowes, is due in September 2008.

•   the bird and the bee, Saturday, March 7 at 8:30 p.m.—Multi-instrumentalist Greg Kurstin and bassist/vocalist Inara George, performing as the bird and the bee, incorporate jazz standards and 1960s tropicalia into their indie pop tunes. The duo’s self-titled record, released by Blue Note Records spawned a number one hit on the US Hot Dance Club Play chart with a remix of the song “F*cking Boyfriend.” Their most recent release, Please Clap Your Hands, features a cover of the Bee Gee’s “How Deep is Your Love” and landed the group on tour with indie pop act Rilo Kiley.

Carnegie Hall’s WFUV Live at Zankel, which began in October 2005 as City Folk® Live at Zankel, is based on WFUV’s pioneering City Folk® format that blends adult rock, singer-songwriters, and roots music. Artists who have performed as part of the series include Suzanne Vega, Jane Siberry, Rosanne Cash, Marc Cohn, Nellie McKay, Alejandro Escovedo, Cowboy Junkies, Joan Osborne, Dar Williams, and Josh Rouse.

Carnegie Hall presents more than 200 performances each season by the world's greatest soloists, ensembles, and orchestras on its three great stages—the renowned Isaac Stern Auditorium/Ronald O. Perelman Stage, intimate Weill Recital Hall, and innovative Zankel Hall. The establishment of The Weill Music Institute at Carnegie Hall in 2003 and The Academy—a program of Carnegie Hall, The Juilliard School, and The Weill Music Institute in partnership with the New York City Department of Education—in 2007 has paved the way for expanded opportunities as Carnegie Hall moves forward as an international cultural center representing the very best in musical performance, artist development, and arts education.
