CARNEGIE HALL PROGRAM UPDATES FOR 2008–2009 SEASON
Please note the following artist and program updates to the 2008–2009 season:
Two-time Tony Award-winning actress and vocalist Christine Ebersole has been added to the Opening Night Gala on Wednesday, September 24 with the San Francisco Symphony under the direction of Music Director Michael Tilson Thomas. Ms. Ebersole will be featured as a soloist in "I Can Cook Too" from On The Town and will join the other previously announced soloists (Dawn Upshaw, Thomas Hampson, and Yo-Yo Ma) in the ensemble of "Ya Got Me" from On The Town.
On Tuesday, January 13, 2009 in Zankel Hall, a third performance by Gil Shaham and Friends will replace the previously announced duo recital by violinists Viktoria Mullova and Giuliano Carmignola. Ms. Mullova and Mr. Carmignola regretfully have canceled their 2008–2009 US Concert Tour. (Two other concerts by Shaham and Friends take place on Friday, February 6 and Monday, February 9, 2009.)
Prokofiev’s String Quartet No. 1 replaces the previously announced Thomas Adès String Quartet, commissioned by Carnegie Hall, in the concert by the Emerson String Quartet on Sunday, February 8, 2009 in Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage. The Adès commission will be performed in a future season to be announced at a later date.
On Tuesday, March 17, 2009 in Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage, bass-baritone Eric Owens will perform Mahler’s Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen with The Philadelphia Orchestra under the direction of Chief Conductor and Artistic Adviser Charles Dutoit, replacing the previously announced Violin Concerto by George Walker on the program. Part of the Carnegie Hall festival Honor! A Celebration of the African American Cultural Legacy curated by Jessye Norman, this concert will be dedicated to the memory of legendary African-American singer Marian Anderson. A Philadelphia native known for her performances of this Mahler work, Ms. Anderson performed at Carnegie Hall 57 times during her lifetime.
