About The Workshop
This workshop gives participants the opportunity to learn music directly from one of the most important composers of our time—Steve Reich. As part of his 70th birthday celebration, Reich leads a workshop focusing on several of his seminal works: Music for Pieces of Wood, Triple Quartet, Sextet, and City Life. Conductor Brad Lubman and percussionists Russell Hartenburger and Bob Becker will join the composer in coaching the participants. The final performance will take place in Carnegie Hall’s Zankel Hall on October 18.

About Steve Reich
Born in New York and raised there and in California, Mr. Reich graduated with honors in philosophy from Cornell University, studied composition at The Juilliard School, and received his MA in Music from Mills College, where he studied with Luciano Berio and Darius Milhaud.

In 1966, he founded his own ensemble of three musicians, which rapidly grew to 18 members or more. Since 1971, Steve Reich and Musicians have frequently toured the world and have the distinction of performing to sold-out houses at venues as diverse as Carnegie Hall and The Bottom Line cabaret.

Mr. Reich has won two Grammy awards—the first in 1989 for Different Trains and the second in 1996 for Music for 18 Musicians. He was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1994 and the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts in 1995 and, in 1999, was named Commandeur de l’Ordre des Arts et Lettres.

In October 2006, Mr. Reich’s 70th birthday is being celebrated by three of New York City’s leading performing arts organizations: the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), Carnegie Hall, and Lincoln Center, in a celebration entitled Steve Reich @ 70.
