CULTURAL EXCHANGE (GRADES 9-12)
The Music of India | The Music of Turkey

The Cultural Exchange 2008–09 program offers the opportunity for teachers to connect their classroom to the world. In this yearlong program, students and teachers explore the music and culture of the chosen focus country through sequential lessons and exchange ideas with participants around the world via an online community and two videoconferenced concerts.

The 2008–09 program offers the opportunity to choose between a program focused on the Music of India and a program focused on the Music of Turkey.

ALSO AVAILABLE: Explore the music and culture of the world through classroom visits by a musician from the focus country, and a final interactive concert at Carnegie Hall in the semester-long Citi Global Encounters Program >.

Cultural Exchange: Music of India

The 2008–09 program, which includes all of the features described here, explores wide-ranging musical styles and cultures from around the Indian Subcontinent. Study of improvisation, rhythmic and harmonic modes, musical texts and traditional forms culminates in a concert of North Indian Hindustani music in Zankel Hall.

Cultural Exchange: Music of Turkey

The 2008–09 program, which includes all of the features described here, focuses on the wide range of secular and religious music from Turkey. We will study the relationships of ornamentation, improvisation, musical accompaniment, and textual symbolism as they relate to the rich traditions of Turkish music.
