Memories

In creating Provenance, cellist Maya Beiser was inspired by the glory of Spain's Golden Age, when Muslims, Christians, and Jews lived together peaceably in a centuries-long flowering of commerce, culture, and art. The performance will feature music by composers working in various Middle Eastern traditions and will incorporate original poetry and traditional melodies.

Innovative composer/trumpeter Jon Hassell's mysterious, genre-defying music has inspired a generation of collaborators and admirers from Brian Eno and Peter Gabriel to the Kronos Quartet, Ry Cooder and Björk. This performance with Maarifa Street will be his first New York appearance in 20 years. "It's difficult to think what contemporary music would sound like without his influence." - The Wire
