Weekends at Carnegie Hall
Touchstones of the repertoire have the ability to move even the masters. Schumann raved about Schubert’s “Great” Symphony No. 9, saying “it is ingenious beyond measure”; Mahler’s Ninth Symphony, according to Leonard Bernstein, “takes the form of prayer.” Bernard Haitink—Musical America’s 2007 Musician of the Year—leads the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in Schubert’s final completed symphony, and Daniel Barenboim, who “digs deep to express Mahlerian angst” (London Sunday Times), conducts Mahler’s elegiac Ninth. Also in this series, Franz Welser-Möst and The Cleveland Orchestra perform Mozart’s Symphony No. 25, nicknamed “little” to distinguish it from the composer’s other, later symphony in G minor— but not lesser or little in any other sense.
